When the power fails – work on…

AS we know, technology needs power to keep working.  When we have a technology that does not react well to unexpected power failures we need to find ways to ensure power is available to the device when the mains fails.

In most cases we suggest using a UPS – Uninterruptible Power Supply.  Basically its a battery.  You plug the UPS into the mains, and then the device you want to protect plugs into the UPS.

These come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, but the rule of thumb is buy a UPS that will keep your device (be it a server, telephone system or such like) for twice as long as you need.  The main issue is if your device does not talk to the UPS you might not notice for a while, and by then the power has gone!

Fortunately some UPS devices have built-in USB ports that can connect to servers. NAS drives, etc. and they will monitor the UPS, and when it says the power has been lost you can program a designated time before the device shuts itself down safely and cleanly.  This can save untold issues and many hours of fun going back to the latest backup.

The added advantage of using a UPS is generally they will also ‘clean’ the power that comes into the device, sever etc. and help protect it from spikes, low voltage or other weird and wonderful variations that can have an adverse effect on your pressious kit.

Below are three examples of UPS models and the kinds of applications they might be used for.  Remember the longer you want your kit to run without the mains being available, the greater the cost!
